Chemical composition reference — weight %
Alleima rows are nominal compositions, with limits where marked. ATI rows are flat-product chemistry limits, not pipe limits. “—” means no value is provided here; it does not mean zero.

Calculated pipe weight — 40S examples
Calculated using density 8.00 g/cm³ and nominal dimensions: kg/m = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × density / 1000. Dimensions are in mm. Actual mass varies with alloy density and tolerances; these are not certified weights.

Seamless pipe and tube: which standard applies?
The product form determines the specification framework. ASTM A312 addresses austenitic stainless steel pipe; ASTM A269 addresses general-service austenitic tubing. Seamless describes the manufacturing route, while the selected standard defines the relevant material and acceptance requirements.
| Reference item | Technical guidance |
|---|---|
| Pipe enquiry | Grade + pipe standard + size/schedule |
| Tube enquiry | Grade + tube standard + actual OD/wall |
| Manufacturing route | Seamless |
| Assembly requirements | Fitting compatibility, finish and hardness as specified |
How to use this information
For fitting-based tubing assemblies, surface finish, hardness, OD and wall thickness are also selection variables. Pressure capacity requires the approved material and dimensions with the applicable design rules.
Reference information explains the material or specification. Confirm actual dimensions, grade compliance, certificates and availability with the quotation. Manufacturer-specific approvals and properties apply to that manufacturer’s product.

Specify seamless construction accurately
Start by deciding whether your drawing calls for a pipe or a tube. A pipe enquiry may identify nominal size and schedule, while a tube enquiry usually needs actual outside diameter and wall thickness. State seamless construction separately from the grade so the material and manufacturing requirements are both clear. If a drawing includes machining allowances, add the required finished and supplied dimensions.
Comparing supplier quotations
Compare quotations using the same grade, construction, dimensions and inspection requirements. A different wall thickness or testing requirement can change the scope even when the product name looks identical.

Typical application areas
- Project-specific equipment
- Industrial assemblies
- Requirements defined by your design
Final material suitability should be assessed against your project’s operating conditions and applicable standards.
Choosing stainless steel seamless pipes and tubes
Seamless construction means the pipe or tube does not have a longitudinal welded seam. That construction choice is only one part of a purchase specification: material grade, dimensions, heat treatment, testing and service conditions still need to be defined. Do not assume a seamless product is suitable for a pressure or temperature simply from its manufacturing type.
Pipe specifications and tube specifications
For a pipe enquiry, state nominal pipe size and schedule or the required outside diameter and wall thickness. For a tube enquiry, provide actual outside diameter, wall thickness and tolerances. Keep the product form explicit so the quotation addresses the right dimensional system.
Questions about SS Seamless Pipes & Tubes
Are seamless pipes and seamless tubes interchangeable?
They should not be substituted without checking the specification. Pipe and tube enquiries can use different dimensional conventions, tolerances and material standards. Confirm the exact product form and dimensions with your project engineer.
Which standard should I include?
ASTM A312 covers austenitic stainless steel pipe, while ASTM A269 covers stainless steel tubing for general service. The applicable standard depends on the product and project. Include its edition and grade in your enquiry.
